How to work out what you need on your final

Your final grade is just two pieces added together: the work you've already done, and the final exam. If the final is worth 20% of your grade, then everything else is locked at 80% — no exam score can change it.

So to find the score you need, take your goal, subtract what your existing work already contributes, and divide by the final's weight:

needed = (goal − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

…where weight is the final's share written as a decimal (20% → 0.2).

A worked example

You have 85%, you want 90%, and the final is worth 20%.

Your existing work contributes 85 × 0.8 = 68 points, guaranteed.

You need 90 − 68 = 22 points from a final worth 20.

22 ÷ 0.2 = 110% → not reachable. Even a perfect final leaves you at 88%.

That's the part people miss: with a 20% final, one exam can only move your grade a few points. It's worth knowing early rather than the night before.

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

What if my final is worth 20% of my grade?

Your other work already locks in 80% of your grade. With an 85% going in, that's 68 points no matter what. A perfect final adds 20 more, so the best you could possibly finish with is 88%.

Why does it say a grade is not possible?

Because the score you'd need is above 100%. Even acing the final wouldn't be enough, so you'd need extra credit or a curve to get there. The calculator tells you this instead of showing an impossible number with no explanation.

How do I find my current grade?

Use the "What's my current grade" tab. Enter each assignment or category with its score and weight and it works out your weighted average. If your weights don't add up to 100% — because some work isn't graded yet — it still gives you the average of what you entered, and says so.

Can I still get an A?

The grade table shows exactly what you'd need on the final for every letter from A+ down to D, and marks each one reachable, already yours, or not possible.

Is my data saved or shared?

Your numbers are worked out in your browser and never leave your device, and there's no sign-up. One exception, and it only happens if you ask for it: the Fill from a screenshot button sends that image to be read into rows. The image is read and not stored, and what it gives you is a draft to check — it can misread a digit, so the rows stay highlighted until you confirm them.
